Mission to Save the World
Excerpt
VOICE B: Someone who loses herself loses the capacity to differentiate herself from others. Someone who becomes psychotic is not a creature from another planet, but deeply human.
SHE: So I’m human. That’s good to know.
VOICE K: (makes noises)
VOICE B: To fight the voices is to feed them. Fighting them only makes them worse. You must listen.
SHE: The voice is telling me to kill my mother.
VOICE B: That’s good.
VOICE K: (makes noises)
SHE: —
VOICE B: If you listen, you’ll be less scared.
SHE: The voices are telling me to kill my mother.
VOICE B: It’s a declaration of love. To your mother. It’s a way of helping you to move on.
SHE: The voices are telling me to kill my mother and you’re telling me it’s a declaration of love?
VOICE B: It’s about the mother in you.
SHE: And why is it a declaration of love if I chop up my inner picture of my mother?
VOICE B: You must free yourself from her and claim independence. That’s what it’s about. It’s the greatest declaration of love you can make to your mother. It tells you she’s the most important person in your life.
SHE: But the voice is telling me to kill you too.
(they look at each other)
VOICE B: That’s different.
SHE: Don’t you get it? It’s a declaration of love.
